Gifts for Life Fair 2012 Millennium Development Goal #1:

Eradicate Extreme Poverty & Hunger

Reduce by half the proportion of people who suffer from hunger

The Millennium Development Goals Committee will host St. John’s 6th Annual Gifts for Life Fair on Palm Sunday, April 1. This year, we will promote the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger in Haiti, where 80% of the population are unemployed and more than 1 million are homeless.

Donations will help fund an Episcopal Relief and Development project involving supplies, training and practical experience in starting a modest “backyard garden,” whereby a struggling Haitian family can diversify their sources of nutrition and save money.

Donations will also be used to fund the Meds and Food for Kids project, which combines locally-grown peanuts and other ingredients into a very nutritious food, “Medika Mamba,” which will save many lives, bringing a severely malnourished child back to normal in 6-8 weeks at a cost of about $65.

A special introduction to this year’s Gifts for Life Fair will be presented at the Adult Forum on February 12. See the article on the Adult Forums for more details..

Join Us on an MDG Bike Ride

The Millennium Development Goals Committee of St. John’s Church invites YOU to participate in a bike ride in 2012 to raise funds for the Committee’s selected projects.

  • The route is 6 miles along the W&OD Trail from Vienna to Reston, and hopefully back again, a total of 12 miles. You can “opt out” at mile 6 or other intermediate points if you wish, with good road access.
  • Free snacks (fruit, bagels, power bars and the like) and water will be given out at rest stops along the ride and at the ride’s midpoint (Reston).
  • It’s hoped that LOTS of families will ride, as a unit. Each family or each individual rider is asked to set a financial goal to raise, contribute, and collect the money and turn it in to the church even in advance of the ride. Mark the check “Bike Ride.” You can also do this on-line; see below.
