From the Rector

Ed MillerFebruary 2011

During our worship in the church which begins each Vestry meeting, I mentioned on January 23 that there seemed to be more energy than usual in the parish this January. The post-Christmas lull was skipped. I was referring to several specific activities including the remarkable day of outreach at Alternative House on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday – A Day On Not A Day Off, the Adult Forum that same weekend with conversation around contemporary implications of the slave trade from a past era, the extra effort made by our Stewardship Committee on the Every Member Commitment Campaign, the Vestry’s continuing dedication to leadership and growth in ministries, and a general sense of eagerness by so many of you to be involved. The risk of mentioning some activities is, of course, that other equally worthwhile activities and the people involved in them will be left out. In this instance, I believe the risk is worth the gamble precisely because I could never be able to include everyone or everything. I am so grateful to be in a congregation where all that it is being done cannot be listed in one paragraph. As we look ahead to an equally lively February, I hope you will find a place to participate.

While activity is wonderful, activity undertaken randomly can be temporarily invigforating but ultimately fruitless. Through worship, prayer, and reflection, witness, and action, we try weekly to be reminded God’s presence as the grounding for our ministries and Jesus’ example as the focus of our efforts. For your part in the renewal of that grounding and focus week after week, I am thankful always.
